SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol used to connect to a web server and conduct different tasks through a command line. The protocol is employed by many skilled users, as the information transmitted over it is encrypted, so it cannot be intercepted on the way by a 3rd party. SSH access could be used for a variety of things depending on the type of web hosting account. With a shared hosting account, in particular, SSH is among the ways to import/export a database or to upload a file in case the website hosting server allows for it. When you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH can be used for just about anything - you may install software or restart certain services including the web server or the database server that run on the machine. SSH is used largely with UNIX-like Operating Systems, but there are clients that permit you to use the protocol if your personal computer is using a different Operating System as well. The connection is established on TCP port 22 by default and the remote hosting server always listens for incoming connections on that port even though a number of providers change it for security reasons.

If not, you could include it through the Add Services/Upgrades section of your CP and enable it right away. The SSH password may be changed from the exact same section at any time with a few mouse clicks. With an SFTP connection, all the files that you upload will go through an encrypted connection.

If SSH is active, you'll also be able to set up an SFTP connection to the account and to upload files safely and securely via any FTP app that supports the feature.

The moment your new server is prepared, you will be able to connect and begin working on your content via the login details that you've entered during the order procedure. A copy of the SSH credentials shall be sent to you via e-mail too. Since your VPS will be isolated from the other ones on the physical web server, there are no limitations as to what you can or cannot do using SSH. You may download, install and manage any piece of software that'll run on a Linux machine, reboot the whole server or only a specific software component, and work with files, folders and databases without restrictions.
